Distribution company Orion has demonstrated a multiple unit adapted to carry parcels at London Euston.
Orion is planning to launch a service between the Midlands and Scotland this year and to gradually grow a route network from 2022. It argues that the trains will enable central London to central Glasgow delivery times of five and a hours, half the time taken by lorries.
Being able to access city centres is seen as an advantage over conventional rail freight, with onward distribution from stations intended to be by van or bicycle courier.
The Class 769, converted from a ‘319’ electric multiple unit and offering bi-mode operation, has had its seats removed and interior adapted to carry pallets, wheeled cages, and the like. The units will operate in fixed formations of four (capable of running in multiples) at up to 100mph.

BR used to do this service on passanger trains but stopped as not making money

BR didn’t have an option to continue the service provided as the DofT when approached by BR asking for finance for new rolling stock the brake compartment was deleted, which also deleted the guard so no capacity to carry items and no staff to handle it.
