The May 19 timetable change is expected to bring some changes to the duties worked by Great Western Railway’s last remaining HST sets - the four-coach ‘Castle Class’ sets used exclusively in Devon and Cornwall.
Highlights are a daily daytime working between Penzance and Exeter St Davids, plus the return of a Sunday duty, which will also include a return trip along the Dawlish Sea Wall.
Three turns are anticipated on Mondays to Fridays: Turn 1, 0533 Plymouth-Penzance, 0745 Penzance-Exeter, 1127 Exeter-Penzance, 1515 Penzance-Plymouth; Turn 2, 1014 Plymouth-Penzance and 1315 Penzance-Plymouth; Turn 3, 1340 Plymouth-Penzance and 1552 Penzance-Plymouth.
On Saturdays they are: Turn 1 0515 Plymouth-Penzance, 0740 Penzance-Plymouth, 1241 Plymouth-Penzance, 1515 Penzance-Plymouth; Turn 2, 0808 Plymouth-Penzance, 1039 Penzance-Exeter, 1422 Exeter-Plymouth, 1638 Plymouth-Penzance, 1930 Penzance-Plymouth; Turn 3, 0910 Plymouth-Penzance and 1150 Penzance-Plymouth.
The Sunday turn is 0845 Plymouth-Penzance, 1149 Penzance-Exeter, 1527 Exeter-Penzance and 1915 Penzance-Plymouth.

I continue to be amazed that the rail industry cannot come up with a worthy successor to the class 34. Current replacement designs are inferior in so many ways from the passenger point of view.
