The first section of platform at HS2’s Old Oak Common station has been installed.

Six platforms are being built in the underground box where the new line will connect with the Great Western Main Line. A new station on the GWML will have eight platforms.

Each HS2 platform will be long enough to take 400-metre-long trains.

Old Oak Common is the first location on the high-speed route to have platforms installed. All six, which are laid out as three island platforms, are being built simultaneously with work taking place from each end of the underground box.

Construction of the eight GWML platforms is due to begin later this year. The route is also due to be realigned over the coming years to serve the station.

Network Rail has asked for permission to increase the line speed through the station site from 60mph to 80mph during the construction phase. A 60mph limit would add approximately 90 seconds to journey times.
