An investigation is under way into how a Southeastern Class 395 Javelin unit went through the end of a siding.

The electric multiple unit (395008) hit the buffers in a siding parallel to the line towards Minster, at the western end of Ramsgate maintenance depot, shortly before 1920 on November 28.

While no cause for the derailment has been given, RAIL understands that the issue was not adhesion related.

It's hoped the unit will be recovered over the weekend of December 7/8, after which more detailed examination can take place to assess the damage and work out the cause of the derailment.

A Southeastern-Network Rail Alliance spokesman said: "We are working together on a plan to remove the train from the siding at a time that will have the least impact on customers. We will share further information once this has been arranged. In the meantime, services continue to run normally through the area."

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been notified about the incident but is not investigating “due to the location being a maintenance depot with no obstruction to the running lines”.

The unit was also sprayed with graffiti in the days following the derailment. Southeastern has reported the vandalism to British Transport Police.
