VIDEO/PICTURES: Vivarail Class 230 prototype

The two driving cars are now fully powered with individual gensets running in harmony on each bogie (four in total across the train). With the exception of interior fit-out on the trailer car the Class 230 is complete.

Watch the video below of the prototype running with three car formation.

All 75 of these former London Underground D78 stocks that are to be converted into Class 230 DEMU trains could be used in Eastern England, South West England and The Midlands. Most of these Class 230 trains could be used on the rural lines in Cambs, Norfolk and Suffolk (Norwich-Cambridge, Norwich-Peterborough, Norwich-Sheringham, Norwich-Great Yarmouth, Norwich-Lowestoft, Ipswich-Cambridge, Ipswich-Peterborough, Ipswich-Lowestoft and Ipswich-Felixstowe lines and also used on the March-Wisbech and Cambridge-Haverhill) and on the Gainsborough Line (Marks Tey-Sudbury line) in Essex.

Vic Berry and Booths must be sticking pins in dolls made in the image of those behind this brilliant re-engineering project. This far-exceeds the new beginnings for the Class 73s that have been reborn in and around Scotland. Well done to all concerned.

There isn't a railway line running from Cambridge to Haverhill.

Well the railway line to Haverhill is soon planned to be built as it may get the go ahead to reopen the branch line to Haverhill.

I can assure you that there are no plans by Cambs County Council to re-open the line to Haverhill. As a Cambridge resident I know that the trackbed is more likely to be converted to a busway. Unfortunately....
