The Railway 200 exhibition train that is designed to help inspire a new generation of engineers, drivers and technicians has been launched.
Inspiration began its year-long tour of Britain in late June, first appearing at London Paddington on June 26 before making its public debut at the Severn Valley Railway the following day.
Over the next 12 months it will visit 60 locations across the UK.
The carriages each contain a different theme; ‘Railway Firsts’ (highlighting landmark moments in rail development), ‘Wonderlab on Wheels’ that tests engineering skills with hands-on exhibits, ‘Your Railway Future’ that explains some of the lesser-known roles in the industry, and encourages people to consider the railway as a career option.
A fourth coach contains a flexible exhibition space.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has contributed £250,000 towards the project, which is to reconfigure four former Greater Anglia Mk 3 coaches for their new role.
Two GB Railfreight Class 66s (66710 and 66719) have been chosen to haul the train and have been repainted red.
