ScotRail has started the procurement process to replace several of its diesel and electric multiple units.
A Market Engagement Notice has been issued by the operator which is looking to order approximately 69 units.
ScotRail has said this would potentially be made up of 41 EMUs and 28 battery electric multiple units.
“The proposed procurement is planned for 2025-2027, with initial deliveries expected by late 2031, subject to approval from Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government,” the notice said.
Although the requirement if for 69 units, ScotRail has said there may be a need for “additional option orders”.
“It is hoped that the new proposed replacement fleet will offer enhanced accessibility, increased provisions for cycles and wheelchairs, family friendly interior layouts and a comfortable journey achieved through good ride quality and seating,” the notice continued.
“It is anticipated that BEMUs will be introduced alongside partial electrification of key Scottish routes by Network Rail.”
A contract notice is expected to be published in late September.
ScotRail’s fleet currently includes a number of Class 156 DMUs from the late 1980s. It also continues to rely on Class 318 and ‘320’ EMUs from the mid 1980s and early 1990s respectively.
