Rail staff encouraged to take on the Samarathon challenge…

Samaritans has launched its annual virtual ‘Samarathon’ fundraising event, to encourage supporters from the rail industry to get active this summer.

Under the initiative, rail staff can set themselves the challenge of walking, jogging or running the distance equivalent to a marathon (26.2 miles) in July.

Participants can choose how, when and where they complete the marathon distance and can sign up alongside friends and family - cheering each other on either in person or remotely.

Time spent training and participating in Samarathon can also be logged as part of the Million Hour Challenge volunteering initiative, which was launched in 2019 to provide a million hours of support to Samaritans by 2024.

Samaritans’ Head of Rail Programme Olivia Cayley said: “In 2020 Samaritans volunteers spent over one million hours responding to calls for help during a very challenging time, and the pandemic has shown that our services are needed now more than ever.

“Taking part in this challenge is not only a fun way to look after your own mental health and wellbeing, with rail staff able to log hours to towards the MHC, it will allow our amazing volunteers to continue to support anyone who might be struggling with theirs.”
