Rail industry urges a rolling electrification programme

An open letter calling for a rolling electrification programme, to meet 2040 decarbonisation targets, has been sent to Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps by a group of bodies covering business, passengers, freight and community groups.

Signatories include the Railway Industry Association, Rail Freight Group, Northern Rail Industry Leaders, Rail Forum Midlands, the Civil Engineering Contractors Association and the Campaign for Better Transport.

In the letter they highlight the environmental, operational and economic benefits of electrification, and say that “now is a critical time for electrification”.

They say that when the Great Western and Midland Main Line programmes are completed: “There will likely be a significant hiatus before new projects are ready for construction. This could lead to a loss of capability and skills in the supply chain.”
