NR reports rail freight resurgence

In the Eastern Region, which covers the East Coast Main Line, the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and the North East, there were 4,839 freight movements in April 2021 compared with 4,760 in April last year.

New traffic includes domestic waste for Biffa from a recently opened terminal in Barking to landfill at Roxby Gullet near Scunthorpe; scrap metal for Ward Recycling from Stanton Gate in Derbyshire to Immingham; and intermodal traffic from a new terminal built by Newell and Wright Transport on part of the former Tinsley marshalling yard.

In addition, scrap metal traffic between Sunderland Docks, Rotherham and Cardiff has resumed after a three-year lull, with ten trains running each month.
