Dragon’s Den decarbonisation initiatives for rail freight

Online ‘Dragon’s Den’ presentations have been used to identify ten ways for rail freight companies to reduce their carbon footprint.

The ‘Opportunities to Decarbonise Freight SME Challenge’ is a collaboration between Rail Forum Midlands, Freightliner, GB Railfreight, DB Cargo, Ermewa, VTG and Tarmac. It featured 90 small companies giving an in-depth presentation before being invited to pitch their innovative ideas.

The winning suggestions include fuel-saving solutions, depot improvements, alternate transportation, technology to assist drivers, and more accurate remote monitoring.  Four successful bidders have already submitted bids for government Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) ‘First of a Kind’ funding.

The project was supported by the University of Derby and the Departments for Transport and Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
