The first half of Mirfield station’s new island platform will be constructed over the Easter weekend, as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The station will close from April 19-21 while the new Platform 1 is built opposite Platform 3.

The current Platform 1 is used for eastbound (Down) services, while westbound (Up) trains call at Platform 3. The old Platform 2 was demolished in January 2024.

The existing Platform 1 will be removed and replaced with a new line, as the current three-track stretch of line is upgraded to four.

Once complete, the new structure will become Platform 1, although the full 150 metres won’t be open while track is not in its final position.

After Easter, work will then start on building the other half of the island platform, which will become Platform 2. Work is due to be completed by Christmas, when the tracks serving both 2025-built platforms move to their final positions. This will also allow the full length of Platform 1to be opened.

Once the final arrangement for four-tracking the route is carried out, which will be after Thornhill Junction is remodelled in 2027, the existing Platform 3 will be permanently removed, leaving Mirfield with just an island platform.

An accessible footbridge will connect the station car park to the new platform, while a new entrance on Station Road will also take customers from street to platform level.
