Midlands season tickets on barcode

Passengers travelling with East Midlands Railway and West Midlands Trains can now buy app-based barcode season tickets.

Although ‘paper-free’ barcode technology has become an established form for buying daily tickets, currently accounting for more ticket sales by revenue than any other method, season tickets remained unavailable until the launch of sTicket technology by Trainline in May 2021.

Accredited by the Rail Delivery Group, sTickets work by issuing a series of time-limited barcodes that cannot be copied or transferred between devices.

As well as EMR and WMT services, sTickets are also available on sections of the Govia Thameslink Railway, Great Northern and Transport for Wales networks.

“Barcode ticketing has been a huge success story across the industry for daily tickets, and we firmly believe that the same will be true for season tickets,” said Trainline Vice-President for Industry Relations John Davies.

“We are ready to work with more operators and retailers to help them offer commuters their tickets via this popular channel.”
