A new automatic wheel lathe has been installed at the Tyne & Wear Metro’s new £70 million depot at Gosforth, ready for the arrival of its new train fleet.
The equipment has been installed by Stadler, which will deliver the first of its 46 new units from Switzerland at the end of the year.

The related modern wheel lathe is an exciting part of the Tyne & Wear Metro fleet replacement project. It certainly marks a new era for maintenance when it gets brought into use on the new Metro fleet. The installation of this piece of equipment is another step in the process to build a recent, futuristic depot, which has been designed to ensure maximum availability and reliability of Tyne & Wear Metro fleet for decades to come. The Tyne and Wear Metro is an overground and underground light rail rapid transit system serving the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, the metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and the City of Sunderland (together forming Tyne and Wear).
