Tarmac has begun a new aggregates flow from its Peak District quarry to Manchester.

The service, operated by Freightliner, began in March, and delivers cement from its Tunstead site near Buxton to Weaste in Salford.

The Weaste depot has become Tarmac’s third depot in the city alongside Agecroft and Bredbury.

Chris Swan, the firm’s Head of Rail, said rail was “the most sustainable way to get construction materials into cities”.

He added: “This new service for Manchester will meet demand for cement from projects in the city centre, Salford and the wider city region.”

Freightliner said it had been several years since materials were last delivered to Weaste by rail.
