DRS signs new Tesco deal

Direct Rail Services has signed a new three-year deal with Tesco to continue to supply and expand its rail operations with the supermarket giant.

The rail division of government-owned Nuclear Transport Solutions already transports around 12,000 containers for Tesco each month, and recently launched its first refrigerated rail freight service using Class 88 bi-mode locomotives (RAIL 948).

Under the terms of the agreement, DRS will run services between Daventry-Mossend, Mossend-Teesport, Daventry-Tilbury, Tilbury-Coatbridge, Daventry-Wentloog, Daventry-Teesport via Doncaster, and Mossend-Inverness.

NTS Deputy CEO and Rail Director Chris Connelly said: “This is fantastic news and testament to the long-standing relationship we have with Tesco, built over the last ten years.

“We will be maximising the use of modern Class 88 locomotives to move up to 76 HGVs’ worth of goods hundreds of miles and, when running on overhead electricity, with zero exhaust emissions.”

How do they operate electric trains from Daventry to Teesport. What route do they take?
