More passengers on Brigg line

Passenger numbers on the Brigg line have grown substantially in the past year, according to recent data on station usage from the Office of Rail and Road.

The line has only three trains each way - Northern Rail services between Sheffield and Cleethorpes that run on Saturdays only.

In 2014/15 Brigg had 1,000 entries and exits, compared with 922 in 2013/14 (a rise of 8%). Passenger numbers at Kirton Lindsey rose 35% from 120 to 162, and there was a 27% increase at Gainsborough Central (up from 1,220 to 1,552).

The Friends of The Brigg & Lincoln Lines rail user group has been active in publicising the Saturday service, improving the condition of the stations, and campaigning for a daily service.

Of the 2,539 stations listed on the ORR database, Gainsborough Central ranks 2,463rd busiest, Brigg ranks 2,488, and Kirton Lindsey 2,524.

With the signalling upgrade project in North Lincolnshire, comes an opportunity. As new trains are delivered, try out peak period trains. Immediately there could be trains on a Saturday. Divert freight trains from Lincoln to go via this line and onto Worksop and Mansfield
