Network Rail is planning to divide itself into eight units based on its current routes, in order to benchmark its performance.
NR Chief Executive Mark Carne made the announcement at the Public Accounts Committee hearing on October 21. Asked by PAC Chairman Meg Hillier how NR will deliver 20% efficiency savings in Control Period 5 (2014-2019), Carne replied: “One of the things that I am determined to do, and that I am really pushing ahead with, is to divide up Network Rail into eight businesses within the company, so that we can properly benchmark effectively within the UK how we perform in these different organisations.
