The rail freight operator has announced a new daily service between Southampton and Doncaster which will also continue to Teesport.

RAIL understands that Freightliner is currently in the process of applying for the Track Access Discount Scheme which aims to cut some of the initial cost of carrying freight over rail.

To begin with, the service will not run over the newly opened East West Rail due to two bridges which need demolishing; Greek Street in Bletchley, which is due to be demolished in August, and another near Loughborough.

Trains will instead travel through Birmingham and up the Midland Main line via Chesterfield towards Doncaster.

A spokesperson for Freightliner said: “We are pleased to be launching two new Freightliner routes due to the large demand from our Southampton based customers.

"We will be starting a daily direct service into the Freightliner terminal at Doncaster which benefits from our state-of-the-art terminal technology enabling some of the fastest turnaround times in the UK.”
