A rake of Mk 3 coaches that Network Rail acquired from Hanson & Hall last year is to be prepared to create a ‘Rail 200’ train that will tour the network in 2025-26 - the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
Alan Hyde, Marketing & Communications, Railway 200, said: “Four Mk 3 coaches will be transformed into a Railway 200 exhibition train, called Inspiration.
“It is expected to criss-cross Britain from summer next year for 12 months, so beyond the anniversary year.”
Two of the coaches are being curated by the National Railway Museum. One will feature ‘Railway Firsts’ and ‘innovation’, while the other will be the ‘Wonderlab on wheels’ - an interactive STEM- based classroom environment.
The third coach will focus on the diversity of careers available for people from all backgrounds, including some of the more ‘hidden’ roles. The fourth vehicle is a partner zone - a flexible exhibition space for partners to promote and educate.
Hyde added: “We are planning for 400,000 visitors, including 180,000 schoolchildren, over the 12 months.”
The train will be operated by GB Railfreight. The coaches NR bought from Hanson & Hall are all Mk 3s (TSOBG 10406, FOs 11092/093/099/101 and TSOs 12091/125/154).
