GBRf plans to expand operation of football specials

Preserved 87002 Royal Sovereign stands at Liverpool Lime Street on March 12, with empty coaching stock for a football special that ran from Liverpool South Parkway to London Euston. CHRIS WILLIAMS.

Following the success of a football special on March 12, GB Railfreight is running six similar trains before the end of the season and is looking to expand the operations still further.

Paul Taylor, business manager for the firm’s passenger operations, explained to RAIL that this will provide another revenue stream for GBRf as it looks to use its passenger operator licence.

The trains are booked by Thomas Cook, which uses Riviera Trains. GBRf is contracted to operate the train and to provide crews and traction. RT provides the carriages.

Three years from now will we see 125 mph footex formed of redundant Mk4 coaches and hauled by 67s and 91s?

Any development to keep high volumes of football fans away from normal services has to be welcomed. Perhaps they can run charters for drunks on Saturday nights as well?

Sounds good for travelling football fans where ever their team is facing away or at home.

Makes me wonder why DRS and WCRC haven't been doing this.
