More Midland Main Line electrification preparation work to take place

The latest section of the MML between Kettering and Wigston was recently delivered on time and under budget by Network Rail. However, there has been no clarity on when the next phase could begin. NETWORK RAIL.

More work to prepare parts of the Midland Main Line for electrification is taking place in June and July.

Over six consecutive weekends from June 21/22-July 26/27, sections of the route between Wigston (the northernmost point of overhead line equipment at present) and East Midlands Parkway will be lowered to accommodate future wires.

Network Rail said this would avoid having to demolish and rebuild bridges.

Upgrades to track, signal and communications equipment and drainage will also be carried out between Kettering and Leicester.

An event at Wigston on June 6 marked the latest section of OLE from Kettering being marked safe, meaning 95 miles of the route is now electrified.
