FS Italiane Group says it sees strong potential demand and capacity through the Channel Tunnel.

The Italian state operator, which operates under the Trenitalia brand in Europe, announced its plan for a London-Paris/Brussels service in April, and has submitted a Section 17 application for access to Temple Mills depot.

It has applied to stable four trains per day, of which three would be single units and one multiple unit stabled overnight, whilst during the day, that number is reduced to an average of one single unit. It has also sought access for two cleaning slots overnight.

The application has also specified which units Trenitalia plans to use on its services, specifying that its ETR1000 model would be the preferred option. The application states that “two roads (of eight roads of the maintenance depot) equipped for rolling stock ETR1000.” would be needed. Each unit is 202 metres long.

A spokesperson told RAIL the plan is “aligned with the objectives of the FS Group’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes the expansion of high-speed connections across Europe”.

They added that FS Group sees “strong potential demand and available capacity that are currently underserved by existing services”.

A final timetable will be defined “in the coming months”, but FS Group added: “The planned frequency of connections will be well-suited to the needs of business customers. At the same time, the comfortable and enjoyable travel experience will make Frecciarossa an attractive option for families and tourists.”

FS Group is working with Evolyn, which has its own depot application to rival Eurostar in with the Office of Rail and Road, however neither side has confirmed if the deal will result in a full merger.

When asked why they’re working together, FS Group’s spokesperson said: “The potential partnership with Evolyn could provide a valuable contribution due to its solid experience in the management and expansion of mobility projects.”
