Rail Minister Lord Hendy has confirmed that freight will run on the East West Rail network.
Replying to a question in the House of Lords on April 7, Hendy said that EWR “enables up to two new freight train paths per day per direction from Felixstowe, routed via Cambridge, through to Oxford and beyond.”
Two paths running from Southampton onto the West Coast Main Line will also be available, potentially opening the route to traffic from the new Northampton Gateway Rail Freight Interchange which opened in 2023.
Both Freightliner and GB Railfreight said they had plans, but gave no specifics.
