Enabling works at a new Gloucestershire railway station will start in February.

A brand new Charfield station, located near the original which closed in 1965, is due to open in 2027 on the line between Bristol and Gloucester.

Work will include re-aligning a nearby road and trackside cabling, installing a temporary barrier in front of the former station booking hall, improving track drainage and vegetation clearance, and continue until July.

Planning permission was given in 2023 with the aim of having it open by the end of 2024.

A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council, said the timeline change was “due to a combination of factors including obtaining various approvals and consents, contract negotiations and the detailed design work taking longer than initially anticipated”.

The outline business case from 2021 contains a forecast of 96,740 trips to and from the station per annum at first, rising to 158,270 by 2036, as well as a projected cost of £22.4 million.

T these are due to be updated before the full business case is submitted to the West of England Combined Authority in March.
