Go-op has launched its crowdsourcing campaign to raise £2.8 million so it can start operating services in 2026.

The open access operator was given permission by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) to run trains between Taunton and Swindon and Taunton and Weston-super-Mare.

Although Go-op has permission to begin from December 2025, chairman Alex Lawrie told RAIL that the more realistic aim is as early as possible in 2026.

Two Q&A sessions are being held on Wednesday December 18, one at BC Council Chambers in Swindon at 11:30am, and Taunton’s Great Western Hotel at 4pm. There, would-be investors can purchase ‘community shares’ and meet the operator’s directors.

Lawrie said: “We have demonstrated our resilience in navigating challenges to reach this point. Now, we confront the significant task of securing investment not only for a dependable service but also for enhanced safety measures.”

ORR has told Go-op it must pay for the upgrades to eight level crossings along its route, which goes via Frome, Westbury and Melksham, before services can start. Lawrie has estimated that could cost up to £1.5m and has identified it as the operator’s biggest hurdle to overcome.

Go-op Director, Martin Bond added: “These events will provide prospective investors with a wonderful opportunity to ask any questions they may have regarding our services. Our team is eager to engage in meaningful conversations and provide detailed answers, ensuring current and prospective members are informed and connected to our mission.”

Go-op currently has 300 members, but Lawrie hopes this figure will eventually reach tens of thousands.
