CrossCountry train

CrossCountry has confirmed the departure times of its new service linking Cardiff and Edinburgh.

The once-a-day service will run on weekdays from Monday December 16 as part of the upcoming timetable change.

The northbound train will leave Cardiff Central at 0945, joining the 0628 from Penzance at Birmingham New Street. They will reach the Scottish capital at 1708.

The southbound service, coupled to a service for Plymouth, leaves Edinburgh at 1307, separating at Gloucester, and reaches Cardiff at 2007.

The seven-hour journey times are the same as the last time a service linked the two cities, which was back in 1987 when Class 50s would operate south of Birmingham, before an ‘86’ or ‘87’ would take the train to Carstairs. There it would divide with one half bound for Glasgow and the other, pulled by a Class 47, would take the other portion to Edinburgh.

The service, which left Cardiff at 0745 and arrived in Edinburgh at 1453, last ran in May 1987.
