Network Rail has defended an extensive year-long lineside tree removal programme, promising conservationists that it will not harm nesting birds or protected species.
It says it needs to ensure that there is no vegetation within 20 feet of a running line.

It says it needs to ensure that there is no vegetation within 20 feet of a running line.
Work has begun on some 25 miles of the Edinburgh-Glasgow main line via Falkirk High, and most of the Borders Railway to Tweedbank, which will carry on until May 2025.
Most of this will take place overnight. Other routes will be similarly treated.
