Train operators closed 7.6 million delay compensation claims in the last reporting year (April 1 2023 to March 31 2024), according to the Office of Rail and Road.

That figure was 30% higher than the previous year, even though passenger journeys were only 16% higher. ORR attributes the rise in claims to a “slight” deterioration in train punctuality.

Separate figures for passenger complaints showed an increase of 0.6% year on year. The highest proportion of these (20%) related to punctuality and reliability.
