When GB Railfreight Chief Executive John Smith launched his company’s new Class 99 at InnoTrans (RAIL 1019), it underlined the importance of the Berlin show - not only to international markets in general, but to the UK in particular.

When GB Railfreight Chief Executive John Smith launched his company’s new Class 99 at InnoTrans (RAIL 1019), it underlined the importance of the Berlin show - not only to international markets in general, but to the UK in particular.

Prominently placed in the outdoor display area, the new Stadler locomotive showcased the future for the British freight company with arguably the most distinctive locomotive policy. GBRf has 30 Class 99s on order, to join a motive power fleet that has already seen the rebuilding of BR Class 56s into the new Class 69s.

The new 75mph electro-diesel CoCos, part of the EuroDual family that also includes Classes 68, ‘88’ and ‘93’, are expected to replace Class 66s and enter service from a new depot in Leicester next year.
