GTR confirms £200m deal for new Class 700 variant

The deal for 25 six-car Desiro City trains for Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) was confirmed on February 17. The deal is worth £200 million, with the trains financed by Rock Rail.

Replacing GTR’s 41 three-car Class 313s that date from 1976/1977, the new trains will be a variant of the Class 700 currently being delivered to GTR. They will run between Moorgate, Welwyn Garden City and Hertford, Stevenage and Letchworth. Siemens will build the trains in Krefeld (Germany),

This is the first deal for Rock Rail, which is a new company formed by Rock Infrastructure Limited. RI began trading in 2011 and works in the Transport, Energy, Defence and Healthcare sectors. Equity for the deal is being provided by SL Capital (part of Standard Life Investments) and debt from Aviva Investors.
