Cornish signal box saved from demolition

Par Signal box, Cornwall, in 2024. NETWORK RAIL

The historic Par signal box in Cornwall has been saved from demolition and will be given a new life as a training facility. The Grade II listed building, which dates to 1878, was closed earlier this year when the area’s signalling system was upgraded.

Network Rail has handed over the keys to the maintenance team, who will now use the box to teach future generations of signallers about the intricacies of both mechanical and digital systems. While the majority of Cornwall’s railways are now digitally operated, several lines still rely on traditional signal boxes.

Paul Gardiner, Network Rail’s Western section manager, said: “We’re delighted to preserve this important piece of railway heritage. The box will be a valuable asset in training our staff for years to come.”
