As lockdown restrictions ease and we start to consider travelling again, the future of cross-Channel operator Eurostar remains uncertain.
Eurostar is seeking financial support from the UK Government, citing higher access charges here as a reason.
The French Government has pledged to provide support for the operator, while £200 million has been provided by one of its shareholders, Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec (CDPQ) and Hermes Infrastructure.
Registered in the UK and supporting 3,000 jobs either with the business or in the supply chain, the company is, however, 55% owned by SNCF (French state rail), 40% by CDPQ/Hermes and 5% by SNCB (Belgian state railways).
So: Should the UK Government provide financial assistance to Eurostar?

Rail Project Manager

“An exciting opportunity to take the reigns as Project Manager overseeing a portfolio of rail civils projects and contracts in a competitive region.”

Bristol area

The Company

This tier one Rail Civils contractor has built a solid reputation for delivering small to medium sized projects on the Network Rail Control period frameworks including CP4/CP5 and now CP6, as well as high volume schemes on minor work frameworks nationally. The business has profited from strong leadership over the last six years taking turnover from £75m in 2011 to an impressive circa £300m and operate without any of the red-tape and bureaucracy that you find with some of the larger contractors. If you are looking for an organisation that will reward and encourage your development, empower you to make decisions and make things happen then this is definitely the contractor for you! To further encourage the growth of the business and to address a significant workload and portfolio of current work, a talented Project Manager is required in the region. Is this you?

About the Job

This is an outstanding opportunity to make your mark as Project Manager and demonstrate your skills and capabilities of overseeing a portfolio of projects in a competitive region. The role will see you responsible for the overall project delivery of around 3 to 4 projects at a time whilst also being involved in pre-contract works including compilation of effective work winning tenders alongside the pre-contract team.

Projects will typically include civils works in a rail environment, ranging in value from small to medium (circa £50,000 - £5m) such as bridge improvements, demolitions and reconstruction, embankment repairs, earth works, flood alleviation schemes etc.

As Project Manager, your time will be split between operational delivery and work winning with day to day responsibility for projects at all stages from pre-qualifying and tendering through to project completion whilst ensuring successful contract and project delivery in the Western region. You will be required to build positive relationships with all project stakeholders, working closely with the clients and site teams to ensure health and safety, quality and overall project programmes are achieved.

The Ideal candidate

To make this role your own, ideally you will have had exposure to rail civil engineering projects either in framework(s) and/or project environments such as stations refurbishments, platforms, embankments etc. You will thrive in this role if you are well versed in Project Management from tendering through to project delivery and completion, and if you can demonstrate through prior experience the necessary competency, drive and agenda to deliver and help the business grow.

The Requirements

Although not essential, ideally you will be educated to Degree level or equivalent in a relevant civil engineering discipline but if not should be able to demonstrate the appropriate engineering acumen through your career achievements to date and progression through technical engineering positions (Site Engineer/Agent/PM) rather than the alternative Site Management/Supervision route.

Your experience to date should be demonstrable working as a Project Manager for a main contractor in a similar rail civil engineering project or framework environment with a strong knowledge and understanding of Network Rail standards and ideally a good understanding and relationships within the Western region.

Circa £60,000 – £65,000 per annum and you will also be rewarded with an extensive benefits package including a car/car allowance.
