Principal IT Infrastructure Engineer - Rail Tech Solutions

The Role:
As Principal IT Infrastructure Engineer you will lead and deliver the physical IT infrastructure development, design, installation, testing and commissioning for safety-critical Traffic Management Systems for the rail industry.
Your key objectives will be:
Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding and apply it to design, deployment and support of systems on a digital platform
Produce and check designs and confirm deployed solutions are compliant with their requirements and specifications
Develop, coordinate, monitor and maintain plans and the schedules for engineering activities
Contribute to and maintain Project Risk Registers (includes technical and commercial risks) and ensure that any significant risks arising are communicated appropriately
Manage the interface between different engineering and technical disciplines
As required, assess the competence of resources employed on the project to carry out their engineering and technical responsibilities
Identify and resolve technical issues and engage with customers and suppliers as necessary
Prepare technical procurement packs to support supplier selection
Identify and resolve technical issues and engage with customers and suppliers as necessary
Manage and engage with suppliers providing technical products and services, including the preparation of Bills of Materials and work instructions, work package plans and task briefs
Report accurately and objectively by collecting, analysing, and then summarising the information in both written and verbal form
Ensure all engineering documentation is controlled and managed, applying best practice in document and version control
Operate conscientiously and safely with due regard to confidentiality and security when working on-site/in client-facing situations, representing the Company in a professional manner.
Role requirements:
Hold an appropriate degree, professional qualification, or have demonstrable equivalent experience
Experience working with digital systems, telecoms, networks and power including the build and configuration of digital systems hardware, software and data
Experience in a commercially focused delivery and support environment
Thorough understanding of technical design, installation, testing and commissioning processes and standards for IT infrastructure such as rail control centres, data centres and similar physical IT infrastructure.
Be resilient, flexible and comfortable with giving constructive technical challenge
Be organised, pragmatic and accurate - errors may have significant impact including cost and reputational implications for the business
Ability to think beyond current practices, asking if there is a better way of doing things, seeking out, proposing and supporting new ideas, improvements and working practices
