Extension offers Amersham potential

The Metropolitan Line Extension opens up the possibility of a rail service from Chesham and Amersham to Watford Junction, linking the Buckinghamshire towns with Watford’s business and shopping areas and giving an interchange with the West Coast Main Line, with minimal infrastructure work. In November 2014, Three Rivers District Council passed a motion supporting such a move (RAIL 763).
Speaking to RAIL at the end of November, Mark Shaw, Buckinghamshire County Council Transport Cabinet Member and vice-chairman of the East West Rail Consortium, said he appreciated the potential opportunities the Metropolitan Line extension to Watford Junction could offer Buckinghamshire.

“I’d be keen to encourage initiatives to improve connections from Chesham, Amersham, Aylesbury and beyond, which could help more people to get to work by rail and move more cars off the road,” he said.

That would mean 4tph to be used on the Amersham to Watford Junction service and 2tph to be used on the Chesham to Watford Junction service with 8tph from Baker Street to Watford Junction and 8tph from Aldgate to Watford Junction either Semi-Fast or All Stopping services.
