NOTES & PRESENTATIONS FROM THE NRC 2010
By RAIL Managing Editor Nigel Harris
Held for the first time outside London, the National Rail Conference of July 8 in Liverpool was a great success – I believe it was the best Conference that RAIL magazine has ever staged.
Sponsored by Merseytravel, the NRC attracted 180 delegates (and an RMT anti-cuts demonstration) to the BT Convention Centre, adjacent to Liverpool’s Albert Dock.
A frank, but tough speech from Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond set the tone for the day. He made it clear that he’s a ‘railway realist’ but that our network costs the taxpayer too much and that this must reduce. He was both explicitly and implicitly critical of Network Rail, where he insisted there must be change.
A full report will appear in the next issue of RAIL (649, published on July 28) but in the meantime, here are a selection of presentations made on the day, which you can download.
