Traction plans for Serco Sleepers

Six rebuilt Class 73/9s will be needed for the Caledonian Sleeper franchise from October. GB Railfreight will hire traction until the locomotives are ready.

GBRf has signed a 15-year deal with Serco to provide drivers and traction to the CS franchise. It is worth £100 million over the duration of the deal.

From the start of the deal, four refurbished Class 92s will haul trains between London Euston and Edinburgh and Glasgow. So far 92033 has been released, with 92018 to follow.

In a statement, GBRf said: “North of Edinburgh, the company is planning to utilise six class 73/9s from October 2015, which are currently undergoing work at Wabtec’s facility in Loughborough.”
